Message from the Dean

Welcome to the UIC Writing Center!

Excellent writing does not and truly cannot exist without excellent thinking. This relationship, however, is not unidirectional; it is often in the actual process of writing that we are best able to form and express our thoughts. The UIC Writing Center’s mission is to assist students in developing the techniques, skills, and confidence with which to become creative and effective communicators and thinkers. On a more quotidian level, the Writing Center also serves as a valuable resource for those students seeking feedback on their current written assignments.

 Writing is a process and a skill that requires the blending of our creative and critical faculties. 

Like any skill, it begins with a corpus of proper techniques, but must be developed and personalized through consistent guidance and effort over time. With a dedicated team of tutors led by the Center’s director, Professor Edward Choi, we will assist you in your journey to become an effective and confident written communicator. The Writing Center’s doors are open to all UIC students, and we strongly encourage all of you to take advantage of this tremendous resource.

Welcoming Remarks

Warm greetings! We are a team of friendly and experienced tutors committed to helping you grow and reach your potential as an effective and, importantly, confident writer. Writing can be a daunting endeavor, for varied reasons. Some may struggle with developing a clear thesis statement or knowing when to use the proper preposition or article. For others, big challenges may be in expressing thoughts in coherent, persuasive ways and building compelling arguments. Whatever the case may be, writing can be a social and interactive activity. You are not alone in the common struggles faced by many writers!

Setting up an appointment with a tutor is easy and convenient. Use our online booking system and choose to meet with a tutor in person at our center or online via video chat. We hope to see you soon. Remember, writing is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice and feedback. We are here to support you along the way. Happy writing!
